There are two different types of repentance. There is a version that Judas had and it was being sorry that he took money to betray Jesus. This type of sorry isn't the true repentance that can lead to salvation. Notice that he didn't turn to Jesus but ran away...
Matthew 27:1-5
27 Very early in the morning the leading priests and the elders of the people met again to lay plans for putting Jesus to death. 2 Then they bound him, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, realized that Jesus had been condemned to die, he was filled with remorse. So he took the thirty pieces of silver back to the leading priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he declared, “for I have betrayed an innocent man.”
“What do we care?” they retorted. “That’s your problem.”
5 Then Judas threw the silver coins down in the Temple and went out and hanged himself.
Notice that Judas didn't go to Jesus in repentance. He went and hanged himself.
So yes being sorry is important but it is more than that. It's going to Jesus. Believing in your heart that Jesus is God's Son and died on the cross for your sins! It's not just saying sorry but it's a going to Jesus to make Him the Lord and Savior of your life and heart. Repenting from your sin meaning going the opposite. Seeking Christ...
Matthew 11:28-30
28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Matthew 18:2-4
2 Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. 3 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. 4 So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven...
Unless you are humble as a little child you will by no means enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Have you ever wondered what this looks like? Well lets look at what the other side looks like. Say one person has a lot of pride in what they've accomplished whether it be their degrees, their toys, their looks, and is rich. With this type of person they are proud of their life. Why would they need to become humble? They are living the "american dream"...
When this humbleness becomes a trait in a person is when they recognize how fallen they truly are and their need of a savior. When they realize that they truly need Christ and His sacrifice. The type of attitude that says, "why would you die for me? You say these words like "come to me" but do you even realize who i am and what i've done? I've done a lot of bad stuff. Why would you want me? What good could you possibly see in me? I'm wicked!"
To look at the face of Jesus and see Him say "I love you!" can be one of the most powerful, life changing, moments in ones heart... Jesus died an unjust death to save you. To pay your debt that you owe God by sinning against Him. Jesus, in the truest form, wants to take and pay your debt...
Will you make Him the Lord and Savior of your life and repent of your sin so that you and Him can be together forever?...
Here are some scriptures to read...
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
2 Peter 3:9 is an amazing verse. There are a lot of bad people out in the world but here it is saying that He doesn't wish that ANY should perish. That's pretty awesome that God would hold back His wrath. It's so important to have a humble heart...
Proverbs 28:13
Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.
You will obtain mercy if you repent from your sin. Notice how it says "forsakes". This is apart of true repentance! Then after you confess your sins "and" forsake them you will obtain mercy. It's not just confessing but it's a combination of both. To forsake your sins is important.
As the Bible says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness".So confess your sins "and" forsake them. That is how you will obtain mercy through the sacrifice of Christ...
Acts 2:38
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Baptism is very important. It is to show that you have died to your old life, which was dead in sin, and you are raising to a new one in Christ. This is to show from a heart that is renewed. Not because it's something that you think can earn you to Heaven or a badge for you to gloat about. Gloating is not what it is there for.
Titus 3:5
He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit
So it's not about what you do. Salvation is what Jesus did and the grace of God...
So to wrap this up repentance is a turning away from sin as well as asking for forgiveness. Turning away from sin is important because it shows that you're trying to change. Then as the bible teaches you will receive mercy. Don't forget to go to Jesus, it's very important. Don't do a Judas...
So go to Jesus. Surrender all of who you are, including the good things that you've done, at the foot of the cross. So you may learn what Paul meant in Philippians 3:8.
Philippians 3:8
8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ
